Focus On Speeding

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has announced that, despite the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 Operation Safe Driver Week traffic enforcement safety initiative will go on as scheduled, July 12-18. During the event, officers throughout North America will be on the lookout for commercial vehicle and passenger vehicle drivers engaging in dangerous driver behaviors. Identified drivers will be pulled over and may be issued a warning or citation.

Each Operation Driver Week has a point of emphasis for law enforcement personnel, and this year’s focus is on speeding. The Governors Highway Safety Association has recently reported that emptier streets due to stay-at-home orders may be inspiring some drivers to ignore traffic safety laws, including speed limits. Many jurisdictions are seeing a severe spike in speeding, with some noting a significant surge in vehicles clocked at over 100 mph.

During the week-long annual event, law enforcement agencies will also be tracking other dangerous driver behaviors such as distracted driving; failure to use a seat belt; following too closely; improper lane change; reckless or aggressive driving; failure to obey traffic control devices; and evidence of drunk or drugged driving.

Last year’s Operation Safe Driver Week effort resulted in 46,752 citations and 87,624 warnings being issued to drivers of commercial and passenger vehicles. Of those, speeding/violations of the basic speed law/driving too fast for conditions was the most cited violation with 17,556 total citations.

Historically, actions of drivers have contributed to 94% of all traffic crashes, according to 2015 statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
